3D TV, already at home

Since the movie of Avatar from the director James Cameron, the word 3D is almost in each mouth, we can hear and read a lot about this technology but for the moment we can only enjoy it to the theaters so what happens if for example I want to enjoy it at home too !!!!

You will tell me, wait some years for this technology to come out for the public and I will tell you “good news, we don’t have to wait very long”. The bad point is that we have to change some of ours equipments if we want to take advantage of it and the price.

Biggest manufacturers like Samsung will be the first one to offer its 3D LED TV and they should be

available in the next coming weeks. More and less the price for a 40” (C7000 series) will be around $1,999 and if you want the best for your home, count around $6,999 for a 55” (C9000 series). A list of prices and characteristics can be found in its website if you are curious.

For the moment, the only brand we can find on the market is Panasonic which already proposes its pack for $2,899.90 which includes 3D HDTV 50”, its 3D blu-ray player and one pair of 3D glasses. Soon, Sony and LG will also show its products and hoping for the competition, the price will drop quickly and not within 1 years for example.

Moreover, except to buy the TV, it seems that we have to buy 2 more things, the active-shutter 3D glasses and 3D blu-ray player. Samsung for example, for people who don’t want to buy it separately, will propose a kind of 3D starter kit for $350 (glasses alone worth $150) if you buy their 3D TV. The kit will contain 3D glasses, 3D blu-ray player and 3D blu-ray disc movie.

If you are thinking to use the 3D glasses you got when you went to watch in theater Alice in Wonderland from the director Tim Burton for example, they won’t work with those 3D TV.

The active-shutter glasses are necessary for most 3D TVs. They work by opening and closing LCD shutters rapidly in the left and right lenses ensuring by this way that your left and right eyes are seeing the correct left or right image at the right moment. Also they must sync themselves with the TV via an infrared sensor.

And if we want to watch the normal channel, there is no problem because the system will be only activated automatically if it detects that the program contains 3D contents.

Like I said, the problem will be to change ours equipments, well if you have an old TV and you still haven’t buy a blu-ray player… it may be the time to get the next generation but I imagine for people who just bought the last LED TV model, a new blu-ray player… and they can’t resist to enjoy 3D experience at home, it will be an extra cost.

The only hope we have it is that manufacturers put a kind of firmware upgrade for blu-ray players like Sony which will provide in the next months this upgrade to its PS3 so people will be able to download it directly through internet normally this summer for free.
