Ridley originally planned a two-part Alien prequel which was intended to explain the origins of the xenomorphs and the nature of the space jockey creature but it seems that there are some changes about this project.
Indeed, he decided to do it as an original film and not a direct prequel however it will take place in the same universe as Alien. With this new turn, the name of the movie has changed and it is called now Prometheus, scheduled on march 9 2012.

Good news for all fans, Fox will release this year on october 26, the Alien Anthology box in blu-ray !!! It will include 6 discs and following an extract of the description from the official website:

the director would give the answer, well deception :-(
Now I have to wait in 2012 to get my answer. Indeed, like you may know, Ridley Scott is preparing a new Alien movie, not an Alien 5 but an Alien before the Alien 1. Last thursday, during an interview done by MTV, the director gave some details. So far, the movie hasn't yet a definitive name so I will call it Alien "0". Ridley said that the script is at its 4th version and they just need to improve the 3 acts and to make the characters even better. The story will take place in 2085, 30 years before the first episode, and we will discover, finally, who or what is sitting on the chair inside the alien spaceship called Space Jockey. Ridley said that the company Weyland won’t yet merged with the Jutani and will be focused on the terraforming. This term means trying to make a planet liveable by seeding some germs of a potential life. For this new episode, Sigourney Weaver won’t be in the party but the main character will be a woman. |
This Alien "0" will have a new point of view while maintaining the basic elements of the first alien. It seems that Ridley doesn’t want to change the old design. He said:
“I have to consider or rethink to what makes an Alien is an Alien in the first movie. What are we seeing, how are we getting there ? For that, the face-hugger will be necessarily involved.”
By talking about Hans Ruedi Giger, the artist creator of Alien, he said:
“When it will become more serious and that the production will begin, we will talk probably together and perhaps we will design something completely different.”
To conclude the interview, the director said that there are few chances to see the movie at our theater for end of 2011, more probably for 2012.
