Amstel concert 2009: Los Derrumbes and Celtas Cortos

The weather was very strange the day of the concert (july 17) because it started to rain just few minutes before that it started and few minutes after it ended !!! The concert was free and it was the first concert of a series which opened the music festival called “Amstel Musica en Grande” which will last until end of this month.

We (me and my girlfriend) and other people arrived to the Magdalena field located at the Magdalena palace a little before 22h where the concert took place. We just walked a few meters to the stage that the rain started and fortunately, there was a little stand close to us so we run quickly under it to take refuge before to be completely wet.

We didn’t think to bring an umbrella and it was a mistake that we promised not to do it for the next concert in this town called Santander. Hopefully, the rain didn’t last long and in few minutes of hard raining, it stopped so we could go close to the stage.

The concert was divided in 2 parts since it was shared by 2 bands, one more famous than the other. Around 22h20, the band “Los Derrumbes” started to play during more or less 1h. In spite that the band exists since 1996, I didn’t know them until this night and I don’t like a lot. The band plays only music (no song) and their style is classified as surf punk pop rock music.

At the end, some people were screaming “Celtas Cortos, Celtas Cortos” since they (including me) get bored to listen them. Around 23h20, they left the stage and we had to wait more or less 30 minutes before that the second part started.

Meanwhile, we could see some advertising on the big screen, clip videos of the different artists who will perform in the next coming days and a guy who was giving a speech and reminded us again the next coming concerts in the same place.

Around 23h50, finally, the band “Celtas Cortos”, that everyone was waiting so eagerly, was on the stage and started to play more or less 2h of their folk rock music mixed with celta sound !!!

The group was born in 1984 at Valladolid but it was not before in 1986, after winning a competition, that they decided to change their original name "Colectivo Eurofolk" to “Celtas Cortos”. Since then, they become more and more famous but we have to take note that in the beginning, the band only played music and it was in the 90s that they started to sing.

Between 1990 and 1991, they did more than 250 concerts in Spain and later, they did some in France and in Germany which concluded with a disc called “vamos”, published in 1995 and exclusively for both countries.

During those past years, some members left the band and some have integrated it but with all those changes, it didn’t prevent them to become one of the most famous spanish bands after 17 albums (the last one is called “40 de Abril” published in september 2008).

The concert was great and the band sang a mix of old and new songs with the participation of the public in some of them. Around 1h20 AM, the band left the stage but not us and all started to scream “otra, otra, otra” (another, another, another).

Few minutes later, they came out again and started to sing again more or less during 25 minutes more. After that, the concert ended for real. Before to leave the site, we took a last drink in one of the stands and meanwhile walking to the home of our friend, it started to rain again. Getting refuge under a tree, we waited patiently that the rain stopped to keep going on.

Our next scheduled concert is tomorrow, Amaia Montero, ex singer of the band “La Oreja de Van Gogh”, will perform on the same stage at 22h and this time, we won’t forget our umbrella.
