You may wonder for what !!! Just imagine that you are somewhere without wifi and you need to connect to internet with your laptop, it will be helpful to know this simple trick, no !!! OK you may have a 3G USB key but if you don’t have one and you have only the 3G of your cell phone, you will be happy to know how to convert your smartphone as a wifi hotspot. Of course, depending of your provider, you may have to pay an additional fee. Anyway, actually, all providers offer a fixed rate with free connection. In Spain, for instance, I pay each month the same price which includes an unlimited internet connection but there is a |
limitation, once I reach it, the connection starts to slow down but there is no additional fee.
The only thing to take care is to make sure that, in your contract, the option to use your phone as a modem is included. Once done, you will be able to convert your 3G/4G network into a wifi signal to connect up to 5 devices, no matter if you have android, apple or windows phone but take note that some versions don’t include it.

For instance, only the iphone 4 and 4s have it. About windowns phone, only the last version and for android, since the version 2.2. In fact, using a phone as a modem and doing internet sharing called tethering are not the same technically.
The tethering enables your mobile to become a wireless hotspot allowing any other wifi enabled device (including other cell phones) to use the phone's data connection to connect to internet.
Using your smartphone as a modem is a method by which your laptop connects to the phone via cable, bluetooth or infrared and the laptop launches a special modem driver.

So how you can do it ? Go to the settings of your phone and select the internet sharing option. Depending of your operating system, it may call personal hotspot (ios), portable wifi hotspot or or wifi tethering (android)... If you can’t find it, it may be hidden inside the network/wifi option.
Once enabled, you will have to put a password and from your laptop, on the list of the wifi connection available, select the name of your phone, enter the password and voila !!!
