Intel light peak, one single cable for the computer

What do you think to change your USB cable, HDMI one, VGA one… for a single one to use with your computer ??? At home, normally we have the following cables:

  • the printer one
  • the screen one
  • the mouse one
  • the keyboard one
  • the webcam one

And if you have some knowledge about computer, you should know that inside it may have a SATA one, SCSI one… and I almost forgot about the firewire one, the ethernet one… at the end, it is a lot of cables !!!

The solution may be the one created by the company Intel called light peak. This cable provides connection to multi devices so instead to have all the cable described above, we will have only one which will make our life much easier.

How it works ???

intel light peak

First, it knows to talk to many devices because you may know that each one has its own communication protocol for example the SATA and the SCSI use different ones. To explain you what is it, I will take the definition that I found on wikipedia which resume it perfectly.

“A communications protocol is a formal description of digital message formats and the rules for exchanging those messages in or between computing systems and in telecommunications. A protocol describes the syntax, semantics, and synchronization of communication and may be implemented in hardware or software, or both.”

To resume, the light peak is a multi protocol so on the same cable, different protocols can circulate at the same time and the most important, it is totally bidirectional.

Secondly, it allows to “chain” various devices one behind the others and of course, it will be hot plug so we won’t need to restart our computer.

Thirdly, with its fiber optic technology, it will allow a bandwidth of 10 gigabit per second to reach in the future something about 100 gbit/s. To give you an idea, the USB 2.0 (the one that we use actually) has a 480 Mbit/s and the new version 3.0 will have normally a maximum speed of 5 gbit/s.

To take advantage of the light peak, we will have to wait in 2012 although during the IDF (Intel Developer Forum) event, which took place last month at San Francisco, Intel showed a prototype which worked perfectly. This new technology will revolutionize totally our way to use and to connect our computer and all its peripherals in a very simple manner. If you want to know more, check its official website
