Valladolid has celebrated this weekend, from november 25 to 27, its 23 festival of submarine cine and for this year, because of Jacques-Yves Cousteau's 100th birthday, it was dedicated for him, a famous french naval officer, explorer, ecologist, filmmaker, innovator, scientist, photographer, author and researcher studying the sea and all forms of life in water. During the first 2 days, projections of short movies and the last day, the movie “oceans” directed by Jacques Perrin & Jacques Cluzaud at Caja España (fuente dorada 6-7). Oceans is a 2010 french nature documentary film and released on april 22, 2010 for Earth Day. The movie explores Earth's five oceans and make us travel in over 50 different |
places featuring ocean animals. It reflects the need to respect nature and demonstrates the negative aspects of human activity on animals and its environment.
The entrance was free and since I went to Valladolid, I have been able to watch it. The film starts with a question “what is the ocean ?”, although it is simple, the answer is much more complicated because it needed 1h40 for directors to answer to this question. At the end of the movie, there was a special guest, René Heuzey, one of the chief cameramen.
There is one scene where there are thousands of crabs, he told us that this scene has been shot by him and his team in Australia. In fact, one of scientists filmed it and after showing it to the directors, they told René to go there to film it. The day he arrived, he could find only one crab so he decided to stay and to wait. After frustrating waiting days, he passed an announce saying that he would reward anyone who could give him a sign.
Few days more, he received a call from a fisherman saying that he saw a lot of them so without waiting, him and his team went there to discover a ground full of crabs of the size of a football field. Without nothing it, he got a massage of thousand of crab feet when he laid down on the ground to film some sequences.
One of the anecdotes he told us is about the baby turtle scene. Baby turtles came out of their egg shells and meanwhile they were running towards the sea and also for their survival, birds tried to catch them to eat them. Heuzey told that if there are no turtle, there are no birds because it is their only food.
Scenes where animals were killed by humans like a whale, a shark with its fin/tail cut… have been shot with false ones and totally created as confirmed by René. Except that, all shots are unique and sometimes, the team should wait more than 2 weeks before to film because what they wanted, it is that animals come to them and not the contrary.
I shall have preferred to watch more unusual species although I enjoyed watching dolphins, whales, turtles… most of the scenes are very common to other documentaries and the main differences are the great music and realization with very good picture quality.
The director Jacques Perrin appears in the movie with a kid showing all the species already disappeared and other, almost at the extinction. The movie is an ecological documentary filmed throughout the globe in which the goal is to make us conscience on the vanishing wonders of the aquatic world.
