Omar bin Laden, political asylum in Spain ? - part 1

Omar bin Laden, the 4th son of the most wanted terrorist Osama bin Laden, landed at the airport of Madrid in Spain the November 3rd 2008. Just getting out of the plane with his wife Zaina AlSabah Bin Laden (original name Jane Felix-Browne), he asked the political asylum.

The plane took off from Cairo to destination Morocco on which it had to make a stop in Spain. 28 years old with arabian nationality, he stayed at the asylum seeker room waiting an answer from the spanish authority.

His father, who is declared guilty for the terrorist attacks of september 11th 2001 against US at New York and Washington, is hidden somewhere

between Pakistan and Afghanistan according to the government and he has 19 children (including Omar).

After examination of his situation, the spanish government told him that they need 72h before to give him a definitively answer, meanwhile he can stay at Madrid with his wife who owns the british nationality.

His wife, 52 years old, certified to the press that the life of her husband was in danger in Egypt in spite that the government helped them and during a mail communication, she wrote “Omar is an innocent young man who has never participated at any violent acts. His only desire is to live in peace for the rest of his life. Like you know, we have some difficult to find a country which accepts Omar, only for the name of his family. It is unfair, Omar is not his father.”

Today, the Department of the Interior has rejected his asylum petition. The reason is that his situation doesn’t fit in any minimum requirements and there is no proof that his life is in danger. Omar asked to be reexamined and now the government has 48h more before to give him an answer.

Moreover, 2 problems can be took in consideration. One is that Spain is the first country which prosecutes for the terrorism of his father and the second is suspected that Omar is looking some advertising for his book about him and his father.

In different past interviews, he has defined himself like the pacific son of Osama bin Laden. Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, secretary of the Interior, said “if ACNUR (Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados – in english United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) will give a positive answer and the Department a negative answer, there will have the possibility to go to the ordinary court”.

Condemning the activities of his father with who he lived during 20 years between Sudan and Afghanistan, he has also asked the asylum at the british embassy in Egypt which has been rejected in april. Like said Zaina AlSabah “we also pray that one of the country in this world will be pious and allow Omar a place to live peacefully”.
