Déjà vu, a lingering sense of real life

Did you already sense a feeling of déjà vu ??? I mean you walk on the street and at a moment, when you go to a new place, your brain is telling you that you already knew this place and lived this moment although you know at 100% you were never been there before !!!

If you have never feeling that, you are part of the 4 persons on 10 to not experiment that yet. Indeed, according to a review of the déjà-vu experience by Alan S. Brown, 6 persons on 10 have known this feeling during their life, a phenomenon very wide spread.

Moreover, it can be linked to some kinds of dream we do. Have you never dreamt of something so

real that when you woke up, you got a feeling of true reality ??? In my situation, it already happened to me, to do a false real dream and to stumble to a déjà vu episode. After that, I always take some minutes to analyze it but more to think about if it is something real from my past or about a dream I made days before. And you know what, until now I still can’t answer to this question :-)

Alan said that this impression appears because of the stress and the tiredness and when we get older, it will disappear. Moreover, it seems that it is more common to people who have a high sociocultural level and who travel a lot. So far, the déjà vu is quite difficult to explain and there is no good or bad answers, well except if someone told you that it is a after life experience because it is part of the science and not something mystique.

According to Francis Eustache, specialist of the human cognitive neuroscience, it may exist 2 types of explanation. The first one is that this impression leads us to an illusion. To resume, it is our memory playing us a trick. The real past situation provokes a stimulus which will activate in our memory some knowledge in relation with the event and by this way, it will create a feeling of exacerbated familiarity as if we will remember a souvenir that doesn’t exist.

The second one is that this impression leads us to a wrong souvenir because our memory is always in reconstruction in order to select or not the right relevant information and souvenirs. Moreover, it seems that this sensation is a kind of symptom of epilepsy. This neurological affection occurs by a series of electric shock in our brain.

Patrick Chauvel, a neurophysiology and neurologist professor at the Timone hospital, said that this déjà vue feeling happens to the same manner to an epileptic patient than a normal person but much more often. He and his team found out that it is born in the internal regions of the temporal lobe and they have 2 theories.

It can be an abnormal synchronization between our perception of the present and our stock of souvenirs so those 2 flows of information lead our brain to interpret the present as the past. The other one is the abnormal stimulation which our brain associates a new event to something familiar.

The real answer of the existence of déjà vu is still hiding inside our neuronal systems and one day, scientists, with their studies, tests and theories, will find its origin and this day, we will know better this lingering sense of real life meanwhile, we can try to make our own interpretation of this nice sensation.
