Massage during pregnancy

The massage is, like we know, a good way to relax body and mind and it is used in many ways to help us in our life. For pregnant woman, it exists a lot of advantages to use it during the pregnancy and some, better not.

It is demonstrated that practicing massage can help to get a healthier baby and a “softer” childbirth. Some studies show, in general, that it allows the relief and the relaxation of the woman during this period and it increases the communication between the future mother and the baby.

They confirm that the massage really reduces the corporal tension of hormonal origin and that the

physical and emotional well-being of the future mother are vital. The benefits are different which are:

  • relaxing, the massage helps to lessen the pressure in the neck, back and joints. It relieves muscular problems as cramps which are due to the weight, muscular tension and stiffness – for example, the neck and back support the most part of the physical weight
  • cardiovascular system, its effect on the circulatory system by stimulating the blood pressure. The circulatory system is intimately linked to the foetus because the umbilical cord is where the baby receives all his nutrients
  • diuretic, by activating the lymph, it stimulates the lymphatic ganglions which, in return, activate the circulatory system. By this way, it increases the filtration across the kidneys which increases the production of urine and the purification of the toxins
  • endocrine system, by massaging different parts of the body, it activates some glands which create some good effects on hormones
  • beauty, it contributes to the elasticity of the skin which create a more beautiful and healthier skin
  • antidepressant, by stimulating the endocrine system, it stimulates the liberation of endorphins that helps to offset the depression

On the other hand, you should not do it during the pregnancy when you suffer diarrhea, unusual or abdominal pain, abortion, diabetes, nauseas, contagious sickness, fever, vomit, arterial hypertension, pre eclampsia.

Take note that it is recommended for pregnant woman, who wants to do it during the premature childbirth, to consult specialists in this area. Indeed, you should be very cautious because it exists a strong relation between the massage of some zones (ankle, heel…) or the long or strong massage and the stimulation of uterine areas which can create negative or positive stimulation for the labour of childbirth.
