Normally when we take a picture, we try to align the scene to be straight – I mean, we aren’t going to shot it in a strange position !!! The environment is full of markers that we can use and thus our scene can be shot in a perfect alignment with our surroundings. In an urban environment, you can take buildings (which are usually in square or rectangle forms) or streets (which are normally in straight lines) to adjust your shot. So according to the camera screen, you are going to align its border in parallel with the closest building for example. If in some occasion, you want to take a street but there are no buildings and lines are “strange”, align the camera screen in parallel with the curb for example. |
In a nature environment, the main marker you have it is the horizon because trees, for example, aren’t normally very straight, I will say a little curved. The horizon is a good spot and above all, it can be used in almost any situations or places where you are.
If by chance you are in a round place where there are no buildings, no straight lines and neither you can see the horizon, try to find a landmark around you for example the floor can have some square bricks !!!
The fact is that you need to find something which can be used and provide you some kinds of marker in order to take a photo which will be well centered and in perfect parallel to the scene you want to shot.
Of course, if your picture is not well aligned, you can still work with a program to modify it so that the horizon and/or objects will appear straight. The point is that sometimes it is not easy to do it because you have to rotate your photo at 2 degrees, 37 degrees... trying many times before to make it look straight. If you do that before shooting, you will save times thus you are not going to spend hours in front of your computer to correct them.
