One of the things I like taking photo it is to hunt the sun and the moon. Sometimes it is not easy because the sun light is too strong or the moon has not the perfect light. During day, when there is a good weather and that the sun is the main character of the day, I prepare my hand bag which contains my camera, a bottle of water and something to eat in case if I get hungry. I take a walk in my city and when I feel that the place has the good spot to take the shot, I take off my camera and first thing I do it is to test with the lens if the sun light can give me good effect. One of the advices I can give you it is to move |
around and find the effect you want before to take the picture. When I find it, I try to adjust my configuration just to know if I can get a better effect and after I shoot.
Taking a direct photo, a face to face between you and the sun, is fun but you only get the sun and the blue sky. If it is the effect you are looking for, it is fine if not, there is nothing special. But playing with the environment like the clouds, the trees, the building, the water… you will get a light effect with the sun rays. For example, taking a photo next to a fountain, you can get a rainbow effect. Taking a picture where the sun ray goes through branches of a tree, you can get one or more natural colors by creating an icon effect. Playing with the building, you can get an expansion light effect like overlaid layers.
I play a lot with the rays and my surroundings to get the most natural effects since I don’t retouch them after with a software (well except to put my watermark). One of the main disadvantage to play with the sun it is that your photo can be shot against the light and by this way, got a bad picture. To solve it you have a lot choices like taking it with flash, changing your position, using reflect system like white surface, some filter like lens hood or using functions of your camera if exist like exposure correction…
But this disadvantage can be an advantage for example if you want to create a shadow effect, make a reflection like sun reflecting in the water, a set of outlines or silhouettes like a chinese shadow effect… Up to you to make everything with and not against you !!!
During night, it is more difficult since the moon doesn’t emit so much light like the sun so playing with its ray to get the effect I want it is not easy but not impossible. Normally the moon is white but I am sure that sometimes you have seen it in yellow or bigger than most of the time for example. When it happens, take advantage of this special situation !!!
Hopefully for me, where I live, the moon is often yellow. This effect happens only when the sun is going down but it doesn’t disappear yet in the other side. When the night keeps going on in its time course, the moon retrieves its natural white color. I play also with the clouds, its reflect in the water, with the lighted building… well with my environment and like the sun, I try to find out the best place and position to get the effect I am looking for.
Don’t forget your tripod to avoid a blurred picture except if your goal is to create a blurredness effect. If you forget it, try to take photo where there are a lot of light or with flash for example. The other advice I can give you it is to not think that the best shot combining with a natural effect is to stay steady. No, sometimes the fact to move a little can give you one of the best effect for example to create a moving moon or a duplicate moon.
It may happen that I used some products to create some effects like a filter, a better lens... there is a shop that I know and that I recommend you where you can find great products to “customize” your camera called Photosolve.
Of course, I can use a software to create the effects but for the moment (and hope I will not change my mind) I am against because natural and unaltered photos represent better what I want to transmit through them.
