Visiting a city like Barcelona is not quite simple if you want to know everything about it. If your goal is to do mainly shopping and enjoy its nightlife, paying someone to give you a tour won’t be worth. In the contrary, if your attraction of the city is focused on history, having a personal guide who knows better than his own life will be a great benefice. This kind of service can be quite expensive but it has its own advantage. You can plan what you want to discover and schedule the time according to your needs. same but similar. This one will show and explain you the most attractive and tourist parts of the city but what about if you want to know something off track ??? The other main difference is also the price since this service is already included in the offer of your operator so you don’t have any additional fees. The cheaper way I know it is to use the tourist bus but your guide will be an off voice that you will hear using a headset.
So the best to know every wall of the city, It is either:
- to use the service of a private guide
- or book a local friend like me
For the private guide, generally the price is starting from 150€ for 3-4h, you decide what you want to discover but normally the choice will be limited. Limited in term that each company, which organizes it, has a group of different specialists and like you can guess, each one of them knows better some sections than the others. But the choice is still yours because, following the list they have, you will select the one which interests you and the time schedule.
You will be mixed with other persons and majority of them are done by foot although some have an option to do it by cars, mini bus or other kinds of transport. It exists also a black market that you can use if you don’t want to pay this high price. Some people, without the certification which accredits them as official, propose also this service.
Generally, the price is starting from 20€ for more or less 2h and you pay at the end of the visit by a discreet shaking hands !!! Since it is illegal, it is very difficult to find ads so to establish a contact, do a search or put an ad on local advertisement websites like loquo.com. The best, of course, is to know someone who knows someone.

For the local friend, it is the opposite of the guide because it is a personal and private tour, meaning that you won't be mixed with other persons. It is a walk of about 4h minimum and the starting price is 35 euros per person. The tour is totally customized according to what you want to discover and the other advantage is that it is cheapest because you will walk with a friend and not a guide.
For example, when friends come to visit me, I will show them places I like and if they have some questions like “what about the history of Sagrada Familia”, I won’t be able to give them an “encyclopedia” but a simple answer. Well you know, I’m sure that you have friends or families in other countries.
