August in Barcelona

August is also known as Festival of Gracia, the best summer festival of Barcelona but before to tell you more about it, let’s start by the beginning.

Few new events will appear during this month so if you want to know what have already begun and still on celebration, I will recommend you to read June in Barcelona and July in Barcelona.

You like dance and/or performance, from the first day until october 15, there is the dansalona. Different artists and bands will do dance shows in different places. To know the full program, check its official website (only catalan).

More and more people are coming to celebrate the

circuit festival, a big party dedicated for the homosexual community but heterosexual persons are also welcomed. The gay festival is celebrated during 1 week from the 2nd until the next sunday and the lesbian festival, from the 7 and it ends one day after the closing of the gay party. To have more information, check its official website.

Now, there are 3 local festivals that will allow you to discover different traditional events like the castellers (human castle), the correfoc (devil parade), the gegants (giant parade)… so you will be submerged by the local culture of the city.

The sant roc festival is one of the oldest traditional celebrations of the city born since 1589. It is always celebrated on the nova square (near to the cathedral of Barcelona) during 5 days, normally in the middle of the month, and it also includes a market where you can buy local food products. To know everything, check its official website (only catalan).

The traditional festival called festa major de gracia is THE local party no to miss. Celebrated in the Vila de Gràcia neighborhood, its most important streets are totally decorated according to a particular theme. Concerts, outdoor movies, theatres and other activities are organized for the joy of everyone and all for free so you can imagine that streets are very crowded. It is always done from the 15 to 21 and for more information, read my topic Festival of Gracia, the fantastic art decoration of the streets.

The fiesta mayor de sants is another local festival and it is like the gracia festival but less popular. Celebrated in the Sants neighborhood, streets are also decorated but the theme is more focused for children. It lasts 1 week and it starts normally the 3rd saturday until the next sunday. I will recommend you to read my topic Festival of Sants, the fantasy decoration for kids.

The Bordeta festival is the last festival of this month and it occurs in the Bordeta neighborhood during 2 weeks from the last wednesday. Comparing to the 2 others, this one is like a party of a village so if you are looking for this kind of ambiance, check its official website (no english) for the full program.
