Nature parks of Catalonia

In Catalonia, you will find a lot of nature parks where you will discover beautiful and impressive landscapes. A great majority of wildlife is a mix of mountains and vegetation living in harmony with different animal species.

An unique place where you will find peace and you will be relax, far away from the stress of the city so a good way to disconnect with the urban world.

If you have time during your vacation, I recommend you at least to visit one of them and if you have to choose one, don’t hesitate to go to the nature park of Montserrat.

Driving will let you closer to the entrance of those natural

treasures than the train and also, it will save you time but it can be more expensive since some parking are not free like the one at Montserrat. Below it is a list of nature parks which is worth to visit.

Nature park of Montserrat. It is a geographical area very unique and homogeneous mixing the particular architecture of its mountains and its mediterranean forest which includes a fauna of around 1250 vegetal species (map Barcelona – Montserrat).

Nature national park of Aigüestortes y Estany de Sant Maurici. The only national park of Catalonia which hides a landscape of high mountains, a great richness of fauna and more or less 200 lakes and streams (map Barcelona – Boi).

Nature park of L'Alt Pirineu. It is the biggest park of Catalonia with its 70000 ha which shelters threatened species, beautiful landscape and high mountains (map Barcelona – Llavorsí).

Nature park of Aiguamolls de l'Empordà. It is a union of lakes, enclosures and meadows which constitute a privileged environment especially for aquatic birds (map Barcelona - Castelló d’Empúries).

Nature park of Cadí-Moixeró. The chalky rock of the area gives a harsh relief but the north side of Cadí and the massif of Pedraforca are very impressive and you can find a great variety of vegetation and flora (map Barcelona – Bagà).

Nature park of Cap de Creus. It is the first terrestrial maritime park of Catalonia where you will see impressive coastal landscapes and some dolmen remains (map Barcelona - El Port de la Selva).

Nature park of Delta de l'Ebre. It is the most extensive wetlands of Catalonia with its 320 km2 and it shelters the most significant birds of the Mediterranean (map Barcelona – Urbanització Riumar, near Deltebre town).

Nature park of Els Ports. It is an union of chalky massif with impressive steep and rough relief and the most interesting one is the Mont Caro (1447m), Tossal del Rei (1356m) and Negrell (1343m) (map Barcelona – Tortosa).

Nature park of Montseny. It is a biosphere reserve mixing a great variety of landscapes and it offers to its visitors an extraordinary biodiversity (map Barcelona - Fogars de Montclús).

Nature park of Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac. Its landscape is formed by cliffs and red monoliths which contrast with the green holm oaks and pines (map Barcelona – Matadepera).

Nature park of Sierra de Montsant. In spite that it has only 92 km2, it shelters a great biological variety mixing with precipices and narrow passes (map Barcelona - La Morera de Montsant).

Nature park of Garraf. With its 10000 ha, it offers an original landscape predominantly rocky with numerous subterranean cavities and it hides inside a star observatory (map Barcelona – Garraf).

Marine reserve of Islas Medes. A good place to practice the diving since the area owns exceptional inhabitants of corals, seaweeds, crabs, fishes… (map Barcelona – L’Estartit).

Following it is a list of 4 little nature parks and they are also worth to visit them if you have time or if you feel more comfortable to discover smaller places than big ones.

Nature of national interest of Poblet. Woodland of holm oaks and pines (map Barcelona - L’Espluga de Francolí).

Nature of national massif interest of Pedraforca. Located inside the nature park of Cadi-Moixeró, this massif is an union of sierras and woodlands (map Barcelona – Bagà).

Nature of national interest of L'Albera. Famous to shelter mediterranean turtles in the eastern side of Sant Quirze de Colera (map Barcelona - Espolla).

Nature of national interest of Pinya de Rosa. Woodland on the seacoast sheltering virgin beaches (map Barcelona – Blanes).

Like my other 2 topics Best beaches of Catalonia and Best mountains of Catalonia, I will recommend you to use google maps or via michelin to visualize the road. Again, I use the bracket method to show the origin and the closer destination – just for reminder (map Barcelona – Bagà) means origin Barcelona and closer destination Bagà.

In some places, you can take the RENFE train to reach the destination but you may need to do a lot of changes – for more information, check out its official website. For the nature park of Montserrat, take the FGC train (R5, direction Manresa-Baixador) from espanya metro station to aeri Montserrat station or at monistrol de Montserrat station.
