Palau de la Música Catalana

One of the most beautiful theatres at Barcelona, for me, is the “Palau de la Musica Catalana” (Palace of Catalan Music) located at "palau de la música, 4-6" street. Built by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner between 1905 and 1908, as headquarter of Orfeó Català (Catalan choral society), the building has been inaugurate in february 9 1908.

Through the time, this place has welcomed on its stage most of famous musical national and international people as Pau Casals, Jacques Thibaud, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Barbara Hendricks and much more.

The palace is quite impressive with its particular architecture.

You can see it from the outside when you get more and more closer. Moreover, after some works of remodelation and ampliation by the archictect Oscar Tusquets in 1989, the new design is very beautiful.

With the project called “a Palace for the 21st century”, the “little Palace” auditorium and the Palace square were inaugurated in 2004 . With all those redevelopments, the Palau de la Musica Catalana is now full of lights and colors in which its rooms and spaces give concerts of any kinds and styles, cultural, social and managerial acts, congresses, conferences, exhibitions…

The Philharmonic Orchestra of Berlin, Vienna, Israel, New York… performed on its stage conducted by prestigious director as Richard Strauss, Kurt Masur, Carl Schuricht… Including famous compositors as Maurice Ravel, Darius Milhaud, Frederic Mompou, Witold Lutoslawski… who interpreted and/or directed their own work inside its walls.

During some past years, the Palace was the main place for theatre shows particularly for the Dramatic Association of Barcelona between 1955 and 1963 and nowadays, with a vocation of modernity, it has welcomed some artists like Woody Allen, Cassandra Wilson, Norah Jones, Ella Fitzgerald…

For our great entertainment and pleasure, if you don’t want to buy a ticket to watch a performance, the Palace organizes guided visits each day to the concert room (sala de conciertos) and sometimes to the Lluis Millet room (sala Lluís Millet) and the chamber music room (sala de música de cámara). The bad thing is that the places are limited to 55 persons per visit and you can buy your ticket by internet for 12€.
