Jaffna with its Hindu temples at Sri Lanka
Leaving behind Anuradhapura with its Ancient ruins and Mihintale with its Mahaseya, we headed to Jaffna by train. We were so happy because finally we travelled in first class with air conditioning for 1000 rupees each (6,15 euros - in fact, we didn't have the choice because the train is only first class). We should leave at 9h13am but it came with 40 minutes late so we arrived to the city at 12h45.
Driving by a tuk-tuk for 150 rupees (1 euro), we reached our hotel Yals Town Inn (57/48, stanley road - 36 euros per night) quickly. The room is correct with good wifi but it has a small stinky all-in-one bathroom and above all, a lot of mosquitoes !!! In spite that I killed a lot, they
kept appearing and there is no mosquito net for the bed, hopefully it was just for 1 night. The good thing is that the hotel is very close to the main bus station (about 5 minutes walk) and at about 20 minutes walk to the train station.
We only visited the fort and some Hindu temples, particularly the most important one called Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil (temple road). To enter to temples, the only requirements are naked feet and only for man, naked chest too.
The fort is very disappointing, it is totally not maintained and very small (don't lose your time). Just at few meters from the Nallur Kandaswamy temple, we entered to the Sivan Kovil Nallu (point pedro road), less impressive than the important one but still a nice discovery.
By chance, we entered at Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil just few minutes after they started a puja (a ritual prayer), it was very interesting to testify it and to see those faithful people. The temple is quite big with courtyard and pool and the decoration is very nice. Unfortunately, it is totally forbidden to take pictures and videos inside.
To eat, there is a KFC into the Cargills Square (hospital road), a small mall with a big supermarket called Food City (at about 15 minutes walking from our hotel). If you like ice cream, this town is for you, there are many places, we tried Lingan and Rio, very good ice creams.
The next morning, we left the city to Sigiriya with its rock.
